Candela Family

Barahonda

Yecla, Spain

Rooted in a multi-generation agricultural tradition, the Candela family has cultivated vineyards in Yecla since the 19th century, shaping the identity of one of southeastern Spain’s most distinctive wine regions. Today, fourth-generation proprietor Alfredo Candela guides Bodegas Barahonda with a vision that blends heritage with innovation, transforming the estate into a recognized benchmark for expressive Monastrell-driven wines. Working alongside winemakers Agustín Carrión and Araceli González, the family continues to elevate the global profile of Yecla through wines that capture both the intensity and elegance of this rugged Mediterranean landscape.

IN THE VINEYARD

Barahonda’s vineyards stretch across elevated limestone and sandy soils between roughly 400 and 800 meters above sea level, where warm Mediterranean days give way to cooler nights that preserve freshness and structure. Organic farming, dry-farming techniques, and low yields reflect the Candela family’s long-standing respect for the land and commitment to authentic site expression. Old-vine Monastrell forms the backbone of the estate, delivering concentration and depth while maintaining the vibrant acidity and aromatic clarity that define Yecla’s finest terroirs.

IN THE CELLAR

Technical leadership is shared by Agustín Carrión and Araceli González, whose collaborative approach translates vineyard character into wines of balance and precision. Through parcel-by-parcel vinification, temperature-controlled fermentations, and carefully calibrated oak aging, they refine the natural power of Monastrell into structured yet polished wines. Their work supports Alfredo Candela’s vision of crafting wines that express Mediterranean warmth with finesse, offering both immediate appeal and notable aging potential.

SUSTAINABILITY

Stewardship of the environment remains central to the Candela family’s philosophy. Organic cultivation, minimal irrigation suited to Yecla’s arid climate, and ongoing efforts to preserve soil vitality and biodiversity ensure the long-term sustainability of the estate’s vineyards. This holistic approach allows Barahonda to balance growth and innovation with a deep respect for its agricultural heritage and natural surroundings.
